Fall is right around the corner, and for those of us in admissions that means travel season! We set our travel territories for the coming year at our admissions retreat last week, and we’re excited to get out on the road. Check out what each counselor has to say about their territory this year!
Adrian (AK, AZ, NV, OR, UT, WA, IA, MN, WI, NM, KS, MT, NE, ND, SD, WY, ID, MO)
From the verdant evergreens of the Pacific Northwest to the sprawling farmlands of the Midwest, I am excited to be working with students from some of the most beautiful states in America. I will be travelling under the big skies and stunning vistas of the west in search of readers. I will the cross the Willamette, the Green, and the mighty Mississippi to proclaim the wonders of learning through discussion. I am most looking forward to staying in the delightfully quirky McMenamins hotels in Oregon and Washington.
Allison (CO, IL, Southern CA):
From the warm beaches and coastal cities of Southern California to the awe-inspiring terrain of the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, from the verdant farmlands and forests of the Midwest to the cultural explosion that is Chicago, it’s safe to say I have the BEST territory. From the natural beauty of these areas to their diverse populations, I love where I get to recruit! Plus, the food is fantastic in all of these places. Just saying.
Emily (AL, FL, GA, KY, LA, MS, NC, SC, TN, VA, WV) :
I am most excited to visit the area of the country where I grew up and eat some of my favorite foods like shrimp and grits! I love going on horse carriage tours in old southern towns like Savannah, GA (where I grew up) and Charleston, SC. Tours allow you to see the towns while also getting to hear great stories.
Karin (MD):
I am originally from Connecticut. I have been in Annapolis for three years now and I am excited to explore new areas of Maryland (it is such a big state!)
Natalie (Northern CA):
“I left my heart in San Francisco
High on a hill, it calls to me
To be where little cable cars climb halfway to the stars
The morning fog may chill the air, I don’t care
My love waits there in San Francisco
Above the blue and windy sea
When I come home to you, San Francisco
Your golden sun will shine for me”

Delicious cheeses, chocolates and beautiful vistas, Northern California is where I will be for several weeks this fall: North Bay, East Bay, South Bay, the city, and more.
Randall (East and Southeast Asia, India, Oceania, TX, OK, AR):
I travel in the US and Asia every year. I have one long trip to SE Asia to kick off my travel this year, nine countries I think. It’s exciting now when I am fresh but I will be tired by the end. If you meet me on the road near the end of my trip, please be kind (and patient).
After a little rest, I will be back in Texas. In fact, I just did a quick drive through Texas going from Houston to Austin to Dallas, three CTCL fairs, as a warmup. This year I get to go back to Arkansas and Oklahoma after a hiatus. I can’t wait to visit the Crystal Bridges Museum in Bentonville. And Oklahoma is another state that I haven’t had for a while. It will be great to have more students from Oklahoma at St. John’s.
Robin (DE, MD, NJ, PA):
I read applications from a good portion of Maryland, all of Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. I also travel those territories and will spend some time in Upstate New York. I am a big fan of early American history and politics so I am really hoping to get to spend some time at some of the historical sites throughout my territory. I am really interested in visiting Independence Hall in Philadelphia.
David (NM):
This year is all new to me! I’m excited to get to tag-team New Mexico with Adrian, and can’t wait to explore the Land of Enchantment. It’s such a beautiful state, and unlike anything I’m used to on the east coast. I’m also reading applications from Africa this year (all 54 countries!!!), but I haven’t convinced my boss to fly me out there just yet… At any rate, I’m excited to get to know a whole new continent!
Todd (CT, ME, MA, RI, NH, VT, NY, MD):
I’m convinced that there is no better place to be than New England in the Fall, and I am excited to begin my second year of New England Travel this year. This year, I’m particularly excited to spend time in Boston MA, Portland ME, Portsmouth NH, Manchester VT, and Providence RI. I’ll also be doing my first round of fall travel in NYC, and can’t wait to walk around Central Park in between visits during the last week of October.
Yvette (HI, MI, OH, IN):
Aloha! My territory is the best. Ohio – my home state, Michigan, Indiana and Hawaii are the states I visit annually. The “Ohana” in Hawaii is so similar to the friendly, open students in the Midwest. I’ve got to get my annual pierogi fix in my hometown of Cleveland as well as my Favorite Zingerman’s sandwich (#38 Schoolkid’s song ‘n’ dance) in Ann Arbor, MI. And nobody feels bad for me when I work a long day in Maui…
