St. John’s College played host to five sessions of workshops for International Baccalaureate (IB) teachers from all over the world, Australia, Thailand, India, Ukraine, Canada, and many areas in the United States. Each workshop included around 200 IB teachers, mostly from Diploma Programme schools, but there were also many from MYP and PYP schools. The only United World College (UWC) in the United States is located just an hour away from St. John’s, in Montezuma, NM. The UWC USA organizes the training for these IB teachers. Each workshop lasted four days and includes hours of classroom and curriculum training. The IB teachers get to learn about the IB grading, as well as about content specific to their area, like Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Physics, Mathematics, Language and Literature, and the Arts. After the workshops on the second day, the Admissions Office hosted a reception for the IB teachers. Great conversations between teachers spilled over from the classrooms, and new ones were started between St. John’s faculty members, admissions counselors, and the IB teachers. Beer, wine, cheese, fruit, salsa, and other nibbles were on hand for everyone to enjoy against the backdrop of the Sangre De Cristo mountains.

Lastly, each IB teacher received a special copy of Plato’s Meno from the college! We chose the Meno as the perfect gift for the IB teachers because it is the quintessential work about learning and knowledge, and most importantly about critical inquiry. St. John’s College and IB both “encourage students of all ages to think critically and challenge assumptions.”
