Every fall, admissions officers spread out across the country (and world) to meet with high school students and talk about their colleges. St. John’s is no exception: thirteen of us have scattered the globe, from New York, New York to Dilijan, Armenia.

What’s the point of a high school visit? Not everyone can come to Annapolis, Maryland or Santa Fe, New Mexico, so we bring the great books directly to you. Last week I lugged Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, Homer’s Iliad, Freud’s Dora, Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Euclid’s Elements, Baudelaire’s Les Fleurs du Mal, and Harvey’s On the Motion of the Heart and Blood around high schools in Paris and London. There’s no other college traveling with a stack of books, let alone ones that run the gamut from French poetry to biology.

While traveling we also try to capture two of the best college towns in the world: Annapolis and Santa Fe. Johnnies choose between a sailing mecca with colonial cobblestone streets just minutes from Washington, DC, or one of the country’s premier artist colonies with a world-famous opera house and incredible southwestern cuisine. Just try explaining Maryland blue crabs and carne adovada to Parisians.

Wherever you are, from Los Angeles, California to Richmond, Virginia, from Newton, Massachusetts to Boulder, Colorado, from Mostar, Bosnia to Beijing, China, there’s a St. John’s admissions representative hoping to give you a peek into what makes this place so special.
